Olive Oil and Health

Throughout history, olive oil has been used to preserve health and treat various ailments. It has been applied in the treatment of gallbladder disorders, to regulate digestive functions, cleanse the liver, relieve bloating, and support the healing of boils and eczema. It has also been used externally for pain relief, rickets, and hair loss. Olive oil is truly a miraculous gift of nature to humankind.

Many studies have shown that olive oil ranks among the most beneficial foods for heart health. The countries with the lowest incidence of heart disease are those where olive oil consumption is highest — the Mediterranean countries. Olive oil contains no cholesterol; it helps lower blood cholesterol levels by reducing bad cholesterol (LDL) while leaving good cholesterol (HDL) unaffected.

In contrast, other vegetable oils tend to lower both good and bad cholesterol levels simultaneously. This gives olive oil a significant advantage, as its most important benefit for cardiovascular health lies in reducing the amount of bad cholesterol in the blood. Cholesterol  one of the heart’s greatest enemies  accumulates in the arteries, leading to heart and vascular diseases.
